Welcome to SCIS - Your First Day

Welcome to the Swan City Ice Skaters, a U.S. Figure Skating-sanctioned club! Our experienced team of professional skating instructors brings a wealth of knowledge and years of combined coaching experience to help skaters learn, grow, and achieve their goals. The information provided here will help you get the most out of your lessons and make your skating experience as successful and enjoyable as possible. Most importantly, have fun and enjoy your time on the ice!

Practice Ice and Club Structure

As a new member, as a gift to you the club will purchase your first Learn to Skate Membership with US Figure Skating. When you purchase your class you become a member of the Swan City Ice Skaters club. As part of your class enrollment, you may take advantage of scheduled “All Club Ice” or “All Club/Contract Ice” for independent practice. There may be other classes on the ice so be mindful of those classes. Check the site calendar frequently for these added hours to practice your skills!

Your First Day

On your first day, please arrive at least 15 minutes early to get your skates (included with your class). Check the whiteboard in the lobby by the skate room for your skater's class assignment. You should find your skaters’ name and class color and proceed to the corresponding-colored disk located on the floor by the entrance doors to the ice.

Your instructor will be wearing the same-colored scarf and will meet you by the correct colored disk. New skaters will learn skills off ice first before they are allowed on the ice. Our skill classes consist of a half hour of instruction, and some classes have 15 mins of party lights practice included after instruction.

Important Tips

  • Make sure skates fit well and have support (whether they are yours or rental skates). Skates should be the same or one size smaller than street shoes. Extra thick socks often bunch and make skaters uncomfortable.
  • Clothing: Clothing should be warm and allow for movement. (Please no baggy clothing or anything that could become a tripping hazard.)
  • Gloves or mittens are a must!
  • Helmets are strongly encouraged.
  • Make sure your skater uses the restroom before their lesson.
  • Encourage your skater to be courteous to their instructor and to use their practice time to learn the class skills!
  • If you have administrative questions or just need direction there will be a board member on duty for your convenience.
